Part A

Yarn Paradise is a micro-MNE. In DQ 1-1, as an HR Director, you determined its likely next stage of growth and the potential Human Resource challenges stemming from further growth. In DQ 3-1, you considered the various choices that MNEs have for designing organizational structure and chose an ideal organizational structure from your perspective as HR Director. You have also responded to your CEO with your thoughts on whether he should pursue an international joint venture (IJV). In this DQ, your CEO has now decided that virtual teams are a necessity for the new IJV. From an HR perspective, what makes a global virtual team effective? Based on the recommendations you made for organizational structure, how would you fit global virtual teams into the structure?

Part B

The CEO has now asked you to write an approach that anticipates and aims to resolve some of the barriers to knowledge sharing across borders from an HR perspective. How can MNEs overcome barriers for knowledge sharing across borders? What advice would you give to the CEO on how to overcome these barriers in virtual teams?

Scenario:

Yarn Paradise is a micro-MNE. In DQ 1-1, as an HR Director, you determined its likely next stage of growth and the potential Human Resource challenges stemming from further growth. In Activity 4, you chose two countries and compared them for the best possible location for expansion. In this Activity, you will utilize the same scenario.

Your CEO agrees with your recommendation for the country in which Yarn Paradise should expand. Now, he has come to you asking you to design an employee health and safety program for this new location. First, you will need to carefully research what makes managing employee health and safety programs around the world so challenging. Then, you will need to address the key components of family friendly and work life-balance programs. Finally, you will address the kinds of health, safety, and security problems that international employees encounter, and consider how this will impact a crisis management program to deal with them by answering the following questions:

Part A (30 points)

What makes managing employee health and safety programs around the world so challenging? What do you anticipate will be the distinct challenges for an employee health and safety program in the country in which Yarn Paradise will be expanding?

Part B (30 points)

Why have family-friendly and work-life balance programs become so important? What are the key arguments for creating such a program in Yarn Paradise’s expansion to the chosen country?
