Letter of Recommendation Assignment

Along with information regarding grades and tests, selective universities and colleges seek to get a sense of whom the students is – their essence.  Yet, the caseloads that many secondary counselors carry are exceptionally high.  Due to this, it is not surprising that getting to know our individual students well enough to write effective letters of recommendation can become a challenge.

One helpful resource is the “Brag Sheet.”  It gives our students the opportunity to brag about their high school accomplishments.  In turn, it provides counselors, along with other sources of information, additional insight into their students’ personal lives, academic lives, dreams, and personalities.

FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT:

  • Practicing counselors:
    • Using chapter 15 as a guide, write a letter of recommendation for one of your students.
    • Please DO NOT use the student’s real name or any information that could be used to identify the student.

List 1-3 occupations you are considering in order of preference and explain what it is about the occupation that interests you and why you might be successful in such a field. Biology, Business, and lawyer. I like Biology and the studies it offers and I also like animal biology. I like animals and I always had. Business is something I can see myself doing business because I feel I’m good at organizing things and able to start something productive. I consider being a lawyer because I never give up a debate till I win. I just never back down until I’m the one that’s right.
Describe how a particular event or activity (positive or negative) has had the most significant impact on you in your life and shaped you as a person and why? The death of my father when I was 11 has had the most impact on my life. His death has made me grow up faster than I would have ever imagined. I felt like I had to grow up to be there emotionally for my family and be strong for my mom. Losing my dad has taught me that life is short and that you have to try to enjoy it while you can. Losing him made me more aware of life and how you can have it all one second and lose it the next.
Please describe your family in detail (ex: siblings and their age, which do you, live with, mother/father’s occupation and education etc.). I have two brothers one is 19 and goes to Palomar College and the other is 22 and is serving in the Navy. I live with my mother who works in a retirement home as an activity coordinator and my 19 year old brother also lives with us.
Pick five original adjectives that you believe best describes who you. For each, write a sentence as to why you chose it. enthusiastic, sensitive, daring, kind-willed, and social. I see myself as enthusiastic because I get excited to face new situations. I am a sensitive person and I do get affected in what people say or think about me. I believe I’m daring because I like to challenge myself and sometimes take on things bigger than I am. I see myself as kind-willed because I do care about others and my family comes first. I am very social I like meeting and talking to people.
Discuss any significant decrease or increase in your academic performance and why? My academic performance has decreased somewhat because my junior year classes are harder than my sophomore classes. Also its challenging to keep really decent grades when you have after school activities and a job. But my grades are still acceptable just not as high as last year.
Compare yourself from 9th grade to now. I matured from 9th to my 11th grade year. I’ve grown mentally and physically. I have way more responsibilities. I feel like I become a young man
What hobby, talents or endeavor are you passionate about and why? How have you pursued this passion? One of my hobbies is that I play football and I’m on the football team. I pursued this passion by practicing extra outside of practice to get better.
Do you work or are completing an internship? If so, where do you work or serve as an intern? What have you learned on the job or through your internship that school couldn’t have taught? What do you do with your work income? Yes I work at a supermarket and one of the most important things i learned when working there is that you’re not always going to like the people you work with and you have to be the bigger person and deal with them. sincei work at a supermarket I will usually bring back anything we don’t have. Also I use my money to be almost financially independent.
Discuss one act of leadership you have demonstrated in your life. I demonstrated leadership when students nominated me to be the leader of a group project.
What is your favorite quote and why? I don’t have one
