A Quien Soy Yo? Poem Assignment

Creative Midterm Project (100 Points of Final Grade)
This project centers on identity. It is an opportunity for you to reflect and express your personal experiences,
thoughts, and feelings to better understand who you are as a scholar-activist and whole person. The project is
divided into two interconnected assignments: A Quien Soy Yo? Poem (Word doc or PDF) and an Original
Loteria Card (uploaded image).
There are several valuable reasons for this assignment:
• To disrupt the notion of the need for “objectivity” in academia
• To build a classroom community that fosters a collective of shared learning
• To employ art as a legitimate educational method for generating knowledge
“Quien soy yo?” is Spanish for “Who am I?” It is a loaded question that merits reflection and understanding,
especially as budding students in community college. Your assignment is to create a Quien Soy Yo? Poem,
which you will upload in the “Assignments” link.
The poem should follow these guidelines:

1. Be a minimum of ¾ of a page of your original writing
2. It may be written in your language of choice
   Suggested aspects to include in your poems
   • Music, art or culture
   • Family gatherings (i.e. birthdays, mealtime, foods)
   • Family/cultural stories (e.g. dichos [saying], tonterias)
   • Lessons learned (e.g. practical or intellectual lessons)
   The development of your Loteria Card will require you to deeply analyze your story for emergent themes and
   major tensions or thoughts about your identity as student, daughter, father, human etc. Through this project, I am
   hoping that you will explore and perhaps discover aspects of your identities. The final product is an original
   Loteria Card that reflects your identity.
   Your Loteria Card should follow these guidelines:
3. Must be big enough to see the details of your card
4. Must have a meaningful number and name on it (e.g. “The Student,” “The Writer,” etc.)
5. Must be an original design by hand or digitally
   -Keep in mind you are creating one image of a Loteria card, not a Tabla (4 x 4 grid of images).
   -Creative Midterm Project should be uploaded directly through Canvas available in the “Assignments” link.
