Gun Control Policies

Different Points of View (Gun Control Policies)

My friend and I were having a discussion about gun control policies because it is an issue that attracts a great deal of public debate. The discussion sought to find whether regulations and gun control laws were appealing to the majority of the Americans. Another expected outcome of the discussion was to determine whether Americans want to retain the rights to gun ownership.

My friend’s point of view was that it was necessary to have strict gun control measures. The point of view was informed by the increased misuse of guns on people at schools, streets, and churches who are maimed and threatened by uncontrollable gun owners. My point of view was that people need to continue having guns as a right enshrined in the American constitution. The ongoing insecurity informed my point of view in the country because people need to secure themselves from armed gangs and even terrorists.

The discussion tried to answer one question pertinent to the issue: should the government enact strict gun control laws?

The information presented in the discussion included facts, data, and quotes from policy-makers and research studies on gun control issue. My friend presented facts and data showing how guns have led to increased gun-related crime, homicide, and domestic terrorism. On the other hand, I presented quotes from the Constitution and quotes from policy-makers showing that people cannot be denied rights to owning guns.

My friend’s assumption of the discussion is that guns are the leading cause of gun-related crime and violence. I assumed that without guns people are vulnerable to crimes and harm.

The discussion could have been better if interpretation and inference, concepts, and implications and consequences were included in the discussion. In this context, solutions to the problem, theories, laws, and the effect of the topic would have shaped the discussion.
